Speaker: Microbiome manipulation

I was yesterday at the annual meeting of the Associação Portuguesa de Nutrição Entérica e Parentérica discussing with an audience largely composed by nutritionists the routes and clinical evidence for microbiome manipulation. It is yet another dimension that we investigate in our attempt to understand our health, one that raises important challenges to he health professionals as the complexity of the information available for each patient increases. Nutritionists must now consider lists of many hundreds of species and associated frequencies that comprise the gut ecosystem in their patient assessment, as well as associated literature relating this ecosystem and the specific conditions that the patient presents, in addition to evaluating the level of clinical and scientific evidente supporting such associations. It is an area where AI is already making inroads, with interesting literature describing algorithms able to outperform human experts in recommending effective diets, for example for glycemic management.
